Knights Baseball slaughters Lassen in home finale, Game 1 of GVC Consolation

Once Shasta College’s baseball team was out to a comfortable lead, Coach Brad Rupert started throwing in the sophomores for one last bit of action Wednesday as the Knights trounced the Lassen Cougars 11-1 in game one of a two-game consolation series with Lassen in the Golden Valley Conference.

Mike Nowak was commanding on the mound, pitching five shutout innings. After Nowak left, he was replaced by Keita Urano, Connor Wilkinson, Zach Larsen and Ryan King to close out the game.

Lance Ibesate finished 2-3 with an rbi, Kenneth Fudge went 2-4 with 3RBI, Austin Coleman went 2-3, and Brad Lohse went 2-4 with an RBI.

It was a steady turn of affairs, with the Knights jumping out to a 7-0 lead after four innings, with two runs scoring on an error laden play in the third inning after Brad Lohse’s chopper was not fielded. Troy Duenas hit a wind-aided 2RBI double in the fourth inning to put Shasta up 6-0 before Andrew Ratterman hit an rbi single to make it 7-0

Kenneth Fudge closed out a solid first year with a 2RBI double in the eighth inning to make the score 10-0. Ratterman hit a sacrifice fly to make it 11-0 later; Ratterman finished 2-4 with 2RBI.

“The guys were having fun, of course I’m disappointed that we missed the postseason especially after a good preseason” said Coach Brad Rupert postgame. The Knights started hot, going 10-3 before going sub .500 in conference play.

Of course, Rupert was grateful for the season. “I really like this group, they have a good time with each other, they like to practice.”

In the game yesterday (Thursday) the Knights fell 5-4 at Lassen.

So that is it for baseball season, the Knights finish 19-16. Happy trails!
